Surfing Costa Rica's
Witch's Rock/Playa Naranjo

Break Description

One of the most famous breaks in the country. Most well known for it's fast hollow rights, but when it's smaller the lefts are good also. Beautifull and remote, every surfer wants to visit "Witch's."

Witch's Rock
Catching it Good

Better on high tide, try to avoid it during dead low tide if possible. Offshore winds are predominant from December to March.

Staying in the Area

I reccomend staying at Witch's Rock Surf Camp, actually located in Coco. It's cool because they have their own boat, so if you're a single traveler (or less than 6 people) you can still get there by boat with the others in the camp, instead of renting the boat for $200 all by yourself. Tell them you heard about the camp from this website so I can stay there next time I go!!!!!

There aren't any hotels or cabinas in the actual park. I reccomend you either stay in Tamarindo, Playa Grande or Playa del Coco, and take a boat in from Playa Coco, or just drive in for the day if it hasn't rained in a few days.

Either that or camp there.

By BOAT: It isn't always possible to drive into Witch's, because of the rain/roads. Boats are available from Playa del Coco for about $200/boat/day. They drive you there and wait for you outside the break, as long as you want surf. Another advantage to taking a boat there is you can check Ollie's Point also(which is often better than Witch's). It's a good idea to get 6 people together to split the boat, otherwise it gets expensive.

Camping
Do it! When it's possible to drive in, it's beautiful to camp right in the Park. They have camping areas right next to where you park your car, including a shower (not potable though!). Bring lots of supplies!!! They have nothing there.
Getting There

DRIVING: Located in the Santa Rosa National Park, it's possible to drive all the way to the beach if there hasn't been too much rain(4x4 DEFINETLY REQUIRED!). The park charges $6/person if you drive in, and although they can give you a small map of the park for a extra 100 colones, you don't really need it to find the beach from the entrance. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the park entrance to the beach. Once you get to the beach, its about another mile walk up the beach to the break. If you drive in, make sure to stop at Liberia and pick up some food and water. There are NO supplies in the park.
