Surfing Costa Rica's Tamarindo Beach

Break Descriptions

The town of Tamarindo has two fun breaks:

El Estero, a excellent rivermouth break where the Tamarindo Estuary hits the ocean.

Pico Pequeno, a lava finger reef which can get perfect with a swell.

Catching it Good

Midtide is best for both breaks. Go surfing any tide except dead low, its usually unsurfable on low tide.

Tamarindo's climate has two seasons, dry and rainy. The dry season, from November through April, is dry, hot and sunny. The humidity is very low and comfortable. The rainy season begins in late April or early May and continues through October.

The Town
Tamarindo is fulled with places to stay and eat, as well as bars and discotechs. Tamarindo and Jaco are the probably the two biggest beach/surf towns in Costa, with the most nightlife.
Getting There

A 4x4 is NOT needed to get there.
From San Jose: Take the Carretara Interamericana (Interamarican Highway or HWY1)
to Liberia. It takes about 5 hours to drive from San Jose to Liberia. Once you get to Liberia, there are signs all the way to Tamarindo. The closest gas station is in Filadelfia, so make sure to gas up on the way down. It's paved all the way there.

Advice: If you are coming to Tamarindo from Jaco, first go to Puntarentas, then find the Interamerican Highway and follow the signs to Liberia, then follow the directions above. Don't try to get to The Interamarican Hwy through Orotina and San Pablo, it's pretty confusing.

Hotels in the Area

Hotel Pasatiempo: Nice and clean, with a restaurant.

Tamarindo.com: Listing of several hotels in the area.

Other Attractions In The Area

The 1500 acre Tamarindo Estuaury is teeming with wildlife, including 180 different species of birds, and the American crocodile. Playa Grande is nesting ground of the giant leatherback turtle, which can weigh 800-1000 lbs!

Fishing: There are many fishing boats of every size available to charter to the World-Famous Papagayo waters, only 20 minutes away.
