Surfing Costa Rica's Playa Grande

Break Description
Beachbreak with perfect left and right peaks, holds waves up to almost double-overhead. A very consistent break, Playa Grande almost always has fun, ridable waves, and catches more swell usually than Tamarindo.
Catching it Good

Any tide except dead low. It can go from knee-high to overhead in an hour when the water starts filling in from low tide.

Getting There

A 4x4 is needed to get there.
From San Jose: Take the Carretara Interamericana (Interamarican Highway or HWY1)
to Liberia. It takes about 5 hours to drive from San Jose to Liberia. Once you get to Liberia, start driving towards Belin and Tamarindo. The closest gas station is in Filadelfia, so make sure to gas up on the way down. Once you pass Belin, there will be signs all the way to Playa Grande. It takes about 45 minutes from Liberia to Playa Grande.

Advice: If you are coming to Playa Grande from Jaco, first go to Puntarentas, then find the Interamerican Highway and follow the signs to Liberia, then follow the directions above. Don't try to get to The Interamarican Hwy through Orotina and San Pablo, it's pretty confusing.

Recomended Hotels in the Area

Casa Buena Vista - About 7 minutes away from the break walking, Kai has 3 houses he rents out. They all have kitchens, and are very clean. It's nice to cook, because there are only 2 restaurants in Playa Grande. $55-$125 night/per house, but he will give discounts if you stay for a couple days at a time. VERY RECCOMENDED!

Las Tortugas - Located right on the break, they also have the nicest(and most expensive) restaurant in Playa Grande. $40-$60 night/room.

Other Attractions In The Area
Giant leatherback turtles use Playa Grande(which is also the Las Baulas National Park) as their nesting ground October-May. They can be seen every night on the beach, but you must pay the guides to see the turtles, about $6 person. Well worth it, considering these turtles can weigh 800-100 lbs!
