Surfing Jaco Beach

Break Description

Jaco is a small beachbreak with fun left and right peaks, you can surf almost the entire beach. It tends to close out when the waves are over head-high, or during dead low tide. Great beginner wave, or for a warm-up surf before tackling Nearby Hermosa or Escondida.

Jaco Beach Surfing
The Area

Jaco Beach is a popular jump-off point for surfers traveling to Costa Rica, being that it is only a two hour (approx) drive from San Jose. You can get off the plane and be surfing on in the same day!

Jaco is very close to Hermosa and Playa Escondida, two breaks that consistently have excellent surf.

Jaco is one of the most bustling beach/surf towns in Costa, as there is actually something to do at night here. There are several bars and Discotechs, and the restaurants always seem to have a old surf video in the VCR. Very surfer friendly.

Getting There

A 4x4 is NOT needed to get there.
From San Jose: Get on the Carretara Interamericana (Interamarican Highway or HWY1)
. There are signs all the way to Jaco.

Hotels in the Area

La Cameta: Located on the main street of Jaco, right across from the Garden Beach Cafe. Clean, nice rooms with showers and a ceiling fan. Run by a nice french couple who speak every language. About $25-30 night from a room that sleeps 3. Walking distance to the beach. Highly reccomended!!

The Gypsy: Located on the North road leaving Jaco, these rooms are about $25/night, and can sleep 3. Walking distance to the beach.

The Best Western Resort: The ultimate in Jaco Beach luxury, right on the beach. $80-$100/night/room. If you like to stay in style......

Other Attractions In The Area

Jaco is a nice place if you are traveling with a girlfriend or family, as there are lots of things to do nearby besides just surfing.

You can go horseback riding up a trail that overlooks Jaco and Hermosa, with a guide for about $20-$25 per person. Ask anywhere in Jaco for that one.

The Canopy Tours are awsome, they are about $40 per person. A canopy tour is where you rappel several hundred feet above ground between trees on a wire, attached with a pulley. Very cool.
